During Thanksgiving, I would have my classes create cards for all of the faculty saying "thank you" as well as a banner for the teachers' workroom and my FBLA chapter would bring in treats for the teachers' mailboxes to say "thank you".
I always had my students work on a community service project the days leading up to Thanksgiving. We did a "Warm Up for Winter" clothing campaign to bring to the shelter. My classes worked on the promotion of the project (flyers, e-mails to the teachers, notecards, table tents, hallway decorations - mittens hanging from the ceiling, created boxes for the clothing to go in, and a spreadsheet to tally what items we received as well as their estimated tax value.
For their reflective journal that week, we would read the "Giving Tree" and they would reflect one someone in their life who had giving up everything for them to be happy. Some students wrote poems or notes to that person instead of a journal and gave their work to the person on Turkey Day.
Please share what you have done with your students to instill the value of thankfulness.

National Business Education Month
Visit NBEA's website for more information on products and promotional items. Items include the National Business Education Month Posters (FBLA Advisers will receive from GaDOE at FLC), Promotional Kits for Schools, and numerous other publications.

Ideas to promote Business Education:
Business Professional Dress Day = have students and teachers in the department wear professional business attire. To promote, put a PSA on the school announcements "Did you notice anyone wearing professional dress this morning? It is never to early to plan your future...sign up for a Business Education Course for 2010-2011!"
Screen savers in all computer labs and Media Center = convert all the screen savers on every compter in the school to be a promotion of Business Education and/or FBLA.
Business = $$$ stickers for teachers and students to wear = create a sticker in Publisher to promote Business Education as a "money maker". If students still have their sticker on at the end of the day, the can come by your room for a treat.
Business Lunch Meeting = create a space in the cafeteria for all business students to eat lunch and have a guest speaker...run a video of all the cool projects students complete in the courses.
Lunch Table Tents = create a table tent in Publisher about Business Education opportunities and place on the lunch tables in the cafeteria.
Promotional Cards in Teachers' Boxes = other teachers are your biggest helper if you are doing "teachers as advisers" because they might not know about all of the electives. Create an ad in Publisher, cut it out and attach it to candy to place in teachers' boxes in the mail room. I liked to use Pay Days ("Help the students get to their Pay Day" promote Business Education).
Please add a post on ways you promote Business Education and/or FBLA in your community and school in order to increase participation and awareness of our programs.

Excel-lent Ideas!
A Couple of FYIs
1. open the links in a "new window" or it will navigate you away from this site
2. if you are not on an Excel unit right now, you might want to go to the links, print and save in case the authors remove the links or the sites are taken down

Review/Intro Ideas
I always liked to start Excel with the “Skittles” lesson (some use this one from Microsoft with M&Ms) http://www.microsoft.com/education/candy.mspx just to see how much knowledge the students already have from earlier courses as well as a review of key terms.
I also liked to play “Battleship” where the students mark their spreadsheets with their ships as well as their spreadsheet of hits (“Google” – Spreadsheet Battleship – and a great Word Doc from Missouri will be the first link).
Real World Idea
Instead of a spreadsheet from the book have the students create a personal budget for their future self. http://mconn.doe.state.la.us/lessonplans.php?task=LP_view&lesson_id=6040&dispPage=8
Math Integration Idea
This one makes math integration fun – it is about baseball players’ salaries and variance…the students have to figure out who on the roster is overpaid!
